Aanii again!
So, personally, I’m just a young woman + mother rooted in reconnecting to my culture who cherishes the joy of life. I’m an empath to a fault, I probably drink too much caffeine, and my current favourite hobby is laying down staring into the void… LOL. I’m a mom to a toddler, what can I say, he keeps me on my toes 24/7. Okay, I’m kidding. I enjoy hitting the powwow trail in the summer time, being by the water, and making my way to fun events when I have the time.
Professionally, I’m an Anishinaabe photographer and journalist. I currently reside in my home community Whitefish River First Nation, in the Manitoulin-Sudbury district.
My work focuses on connection and community. I enjoy photographing the joy of Indigenous life, from powwows, celebrations/milestones, and special projects rooted in Indigenous identity. But I also love photographing energetic events! One of the highlights of my career has been photographing concerts, dances, and shows.
I’m extremely passionate about documenting stories in truth, respect, joy and love. As a small-community girl, I’ve known life through the waves of hardship and ease simultaneously like many of us have, and the power of community is what drives my work and life.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with organizations such as Mnaamodzawin Health Services, Kenjgewin Teg Post-Secondary Institute, Ngwaagin Gamig, Manotsaywin Nanotoojig Inc. Za-geh-do-win Information Clearinghouse, Noojmowin Teg Health Centre.
I also work with The Manitoulin Expositor sharing the stories of Indigenous people and life on Manitoulin Island.
Fun Facts About lil’ ole Me (…I’ll let you decide if they’re fun, but they are facts lol!!)
I’ve been taking photos since 2017!! (Which is crazy long when I think about it)
I am the Champion Skip-Bo Player (…between myself, sister + brother.)
I am fluent in movie and TV show quotes.
My rising sign is in Libra, Sun in Libra, Moon in Capricorn (Do I know what any of it means? No, but I like to be prepared.)
If I could own absolutely any vehicle in the entire world, it would be a 1963 Chevy C-10 stepside truck, specifically orange. (If you know, you know)
I grew up with a nearly complete Disney VHS collection, all to be donated, which I then spent YEARS recollecting said collection JUST to lose every single one in a move. (That’s not so much a fun fact, just a heartbreak I like to talk about.)
